A very early flowering elwesii often out by the turn of the year; even in Scotland. It responds very well to mild forcing - pot grown with a little protection - it is easy to have it in flower for Christmas. Like many elwesii, it does best when lifted and split regularly.
The original plant came from the Ampthill garden of Jack Mead, where a single bulb flowered annually in a patio tub at Christmas; the sole survivor of a packet of wild collected elwesii.
The overgrown garden was levelled and burnt on his death. The single bulb was recovered from the top of the bonfire pile, where the planter had been unceremoniously emptied.
